If you’ve ever wondered when to schedule your family photos, you’re not alone. Choosing the right season can make a huge difference in the look, feel, and vibe of your images — not to mention your family’s comfort and overall experience.
As a family photographer in Louisville, KY, I’ve photographed sessions in every season, and here’s my breakdown of what each one offers (and when might be just right for your crew).
Spring (March–May): Fresh, Soft, and Blooming
Spring is one of the most popular times for family photos. Trees are budding, flowers are blooming, and the light is soft and golden. It’s perfect for lighter tones, flowy dresses, and a fresh, joyful feel.
Best for:
- Young kids who do better in mild temps
- Wildflower fields and pastel color palettes
- “Fresh start” or maternity themes
Bonus tip: Aim for late April or early May when the weather has steadied a bit.
Summer (June–August): Golden Light and Longer Days
Summer gives you lots of scheduling flexibility — especially if your kids are out of school. Think golden fields, barefoot sessions, and sunkissed light in the evenings.
Best for:
- Beachy or nature-based sessions
- Adventure-loving families
- Sunset lovers (the golden hour is 🔥)
Keep in mind: It can get hot. I usually recommend early morning or late evening sessions to beat the heat.
Fall (September–November): Cozy, Colorful, and Iconic
Fall is the most requested season for family photos — and for good reason. You get all the autumn tones, cozy outfits, and magical light.
Best for:
- Holiday card photos
- Earth-toned wardrobe lovers
- Layered looks and texture
Pro tip: Book early — fall spots fill up fast!
Winter (December–February): Moody, Intimate, and Underused
Winter might seem like an off-season, but it’s actually perfect if you love a clean, minimal, or more emotional vibe. Bare trees, cozy coats, and moody skies make for striking photos — especially in snow or urban settings.
Best for:
- At-home lifestyle sessions
- Urban locations with dramatic contrast
- Families who want something different
So, When’s Your Best Time?
Each season has something unique to offer — and it really comes down to your personal style, your family’s schedule, and the story you want to tell.
If you’re dreaming about a session soon, I’d love to help you find the perfect timing and location.
